Frequently Asked Questions

Ok – so it’s our first season so there can’t really be any “Frequently Asked Questions”. However we have used our imagination and come up with what we think people might want to ask. Obviously if there is anything we haven’t thought of please contact us and we will do our best to help.

Q. Standards - what can we expect and how are they maintained ?

We are sure that, when you have visited Colgrain once, you will want to come again for other holidays and also recommend us to your friends and family.  We have done our utmost to ensure that your holiday cottage is of the highest standard and that it offers value for money.

Our property has been chosen and furnished with a view to obtaining a 5 Star rating from the Scottish Tourist Board.  To gain this we need to provide top quality fixtures and furnishings and also maintain the property to the utmost standard of cleanliness.  In addition we need to ensure that you are totally satisfied with the service you get from us.  We really have tried very hard!  Obviously as this is our first season, we have yet to be formally assessed.

The property is supervised locally by our representative who knows the property and location well. In addition to making sure that the property is totally ready for you to our exacting standards, she will also be able to give you further information about the area and generally help in any way possible to make sure that your stay is a wonderful experience.

After your holiday we will contact you to ask if you would be kind enough to complete a questionnaire telling us what you think.  By taking on board any comments that our guests make we will ensure that our standards are maintained and, if possible improved.

Q. Furnishings and Equipment - will the cottage contain everything we need ?

We believe so.  We have gone to extreme lengths to provide everything we can think of, excepting furniture for babies (cots, high chairs and the like), that you will need.  If you find this not to be the case please use the feedback form to let us know.

When you finalise a booking with us we will send you a detailed list of what will be available in terms of things like washing up liquid etc.  We have found it infuriating over the years to either turn up with a load of stuff that is already there or, worse, to arrive to find there isn’t even a cloth to wipe worktops with!

Q. Pets - can we take our pet with us ?

You are very welcome to bring your pets to Colgrain – even the hamster can come for a break if you want!  All that we ask is that you do not allow your dogs to go upstairs and that you bring their own bed with you.  We have provided a removable stair gate to help with this if necessary.  It goes without saying that holidaymakers should lift any toilet matter within the garden of Colgrain.  As devoted dog lovers we know that, inevitably, the presence of dogs will mean that extra cleaning is required.  This is why we charge an extra £10 per week for pets.  Our Labrador, Pearl, thinks Colgrain is the most wonderful place.

Please note that, at the moment, like the majority of other properties in the area, there is no gate at the bottom of the drive so you will need to take care that your dog cannot stray.

Q. Linen - what is provided ?

All linen including bedding, a generous supply of towels and tea towels are provided.  There is adequate linen in the property.  For holidaymakers staying for two weeks there will be a ‘half change’ in the middle weekend.  A half change consists of replacing any towels requiring washing and the under sheets and pillow cases on the beds being used.

Q. Price - how much will our holiday cottage cost ?

We’ve divided the year into a series of price periods or bands - WINTER, LOW, MID, HIGH and PEAK. Please see “Availability and Tariff” section for details.

Q. Payment - how do we pay for our holiday ?

Where you are booking well in advance we would ask you to send a deposit of 30% of the rental. The balance of the rental is due 6 weeks before the start of the holiday.

Where you are booking within six weeks of the start date of the holiday we require full payment at the time of booking.

All payments should be made by cheque and made payable to Mrs C Cameron.

Q. Arrival and Departure - what time can we arrive and when do we have to leave ?

Lettings commence at 4.00 pm on the first day of your holiday (Saturday) and end at 10.00 am on the day of departure (Saturday). Fortunately, our keyholder lives close by but obviously she needs time to prepare the cottage for incoming guests.

Full contact details for the keyholder will be provided with all confirmed bookings so that you can make any arrangements to gain access if you will be arriving later than 4.00pm.

Q. Short Breaks - can I book a short/weekend break ?

It may be possible to take short breaks in Colgrain, subject to availability.

Q. Changing the Holiday - what happens if we want to make changes to our holiday ?

In the first instance please call us to discuss the changes. If it’s possible to accommodate them, we’ll be happy to help.

Q. Cancellation - what happens if I need to cancel my holiday ?

Financial regulations mean that we are not able to sell you Cancellation Insurance or include it in the price of your holiday. You should therefore satisfy yourself that holiday/travel/cancellation insurance appropriate to your own circumstances is available from a source regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

In the event that you have to cancel your holiday, we shall try to re-let it for you. If it is re-let, monies received for your holiday, less a fee equal to 10% of the cancelled total rental value will be refunded to the holidaymaker within 2 weeks after the re-let holiday has taken place. If we are unable to re-let, all monies paid will be forfeited. Further details of our Cancellation Policy are available in Section 13 of our Terms and Conditions.

Q. Terms and Conditions - what are they ?

When you make a booking you enter into a legal contract with the owner of the holiday property. The Terms and Conditions are shown on our web site and provided in writing.

Q. Problems - what do we do if something unexpected occurs ?

We do everything possible to ensure you have an enjoyable stay, but occasionally things go wrong. If a problem occurs you should, in the first instance, contact the keyholder. Any problem must be reported immediately, as you will appreciate that it may be much more difficult to resolve problems after the event.
